History of A.R.M.

In 1972, a small group of massage practitioners, trained by the Ashfield Chiropractic College, began meeting to share and develop their skills, to swap tips and provide mutual support.

In 1976 they formalised their meetings and absorbed the Professional Masseurs Association which had existed since the early 1920s. They took the name of the Association of Remedial Masseurs (A.R.M.), adopted a constitution and became a registered company limited by guarantee.

Due to changing legal requirements, in 1993 A.R.M. moved from being a company limited by guarantee to become a body incorporated under the 1984 Association's Act. We are now a nationally incorporated association under the Australian Securities Commission.

The A.R.M. has continued to grow, in strength and in the services it can provide for its members. By the 1980s, the A.R.M. had become the largest organisation of massage therapists in Australia. It is now a major voice for the industry, recognised by government agencies and other health-related groups.

Despite its professional stature, A.R.M. has maintained its supportive, informal character. Members are welcome to participate in all A.R.M. activities and to utilise all the benefits of membership.
